Woodland To Workshop (Nov 2022)

December 13, 2022

The North East Forestry Group recently completed a two-year project entitled Woodland to Workshop, with support from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. The project involved a calendar of events and modules focusing on

    • the environmental benefits of forestry
    • the benefits of woodlands to farmers and the wellness of the broader community
    • the benefits of productive forestry and sustainable forest management in relation to
      producing quality timber
    • practical demonstrations on timber milling, grading and valuation using a mobile sawmill
    • timber beam building construction
    • Furniture making and other uses of locally grown quality timber

The woodland to workshop project also included the provision of locally grown and milled timber to neighbouring schools, which the students used in their woodwork classes to create some beautiful pieces. The group aims to develop this market further with the supply of sustainably sourced native timber that’s grown locally to schools in Ireland. The NEFG sees this link with the next generation of timber users as a vital component of the project into the future.
