NEFG To Host ASH DIEBACK Event

July 31, 2023

When & where

Thursday, 17th August @ 7pm

Robinstown, Navan, Co. Meath

About the ash dieback event

The North East Forestry Group (NEFG) are hosting an Ash Dieback event at a group member’s forest in Robinstown, near Navan, County Meath. This event will focus on how forest owners can remove dead or infected trees in the most economical manner, while salvaging some income from this operation.

The Forest owner, Thomas Loughran, who has removed his diseased ash trees and replanted with alternative species, will talk about his own personal experience of this operation. This event is aimed primarily at having forest owners discuss issues and solutions specific to each owner’s woodland and how they hope to remove the diseased ash trees and replant with new trees.

This event is open to existing and new members and promises to be a very informative and relaxed evening for all.

Topics will include

Methods of felling and removal of infected trees

Selling the removed timber along with discussion on price

Replanting new trees

Weed control of new trees

New and existing DAFM grant supports for forest owners.

Speakers

Manus Crowley, who is Thomas Loughran’s approved forester, will speak about how soil conditions and overall forest environment influenced the decision on choosing the correct new trees to be planted.

Also speaking will be Kevin O’Connell of Teagasc, who will explain in very simple terms how best the forest owner can go about this operation, along with new and existing DAFM grant supports.

North East Forestry Group

The NEFG have members in counties Cavan, Louth, Meath and Monaghan. Members can also get their forests PEFC and FSC certified under the group certification scheme. Members are asked to bring the next generation of family members to this meeting, so they can learn the benefits of forest ownership and how belonging to a forest owners’ group can help to increase their knowledge in an informal group environment.

This is an outdoor event and as the ground may be uneven, boots and, of course, rainproof gear is essential.
