About the Speakers

Prof. Áine Ní Dhubháin has been a lecturer in Forestry in University College Dublin since 1995 and has led the Forestry Degree programme there since 2019. She has spent much of her career conducting research on private forest owners, focusing in particular on their forestry behaviour and their knowledge needs. Other areas of research she has engaged in include the socio-economic impacts of forestry in Ireland and as part of this work she has investigated farmers’ and rural communities’ attitudes to forestry. Her silvicultural research has focused on continuous cover forestry, work that she commenced in 2000 and continues to this day. She currently leads a research project on the early-stage transformation of even-aged Sitka spruce stands to continuous cover forestry as part of the DAFM-funded ContinuFOR project.

Luke Dowd is a UCD forestry graduate, having earned both his BSc and MSc through research. His MSc investigated the growth model Growfor and its effectiveness in highly productive stands of Sitka spruce. Presently, he is pursuing a PhD as part of the DAFM-funded AdaptForRes project. He is part of pillar two which is exploring how forest management practices can enhance resilience within the Irish forest estate protecting carbon stores. Luke embraces opportunities to expand his horizons, having previously worked in Iceland, New Zealand and studied in the US. However, he is passionate and focused on Irish forestry and its future.
