An introduction to
Small-Scale Sawmilling

Adding Value to our Hardwoods

In 2024, Irish Forest Owners ran a national peer-to-peer learning project entitled ‘Adding Value to our Hardwoods’.

The aim of this project is to maximise the economic benefits of broadleaves, to develop the skills of forest owners to deliver Irish Grown Hardwoods onto the market, and to create a framework on which to build a national network of ‘owner millers’.

Central to the project was a 5-day training course for forest owners from around Ireland on small-scale sawmilling, to advance their technical skills and knowledge in sawmilling, grading, drying and storing Irish grown hardwood timber, as well as training on forest management, timber uses and timber marketing.
