The Laois Farm Forestry Group was established in 2009 to progress the interests of private forestry owners in the county. Liam Kelly of Teagasc was a key driver and continues to give valuable assistance to the group. In addition to the provision of on-going training, knowledge transfer and field events in farm forestry, the Laois group has carried out an inventory of the private forestry resource in the county. It has also examined the possibility of establishing a wood-fuelled district heating plant in Portlaoise. The latter project remains on the group’s agenda.
